Polynomial Roots from Companion Matrix Eigenvalues

چکیده
In classical linear algebra, the eigenvalues of a matrix are sometimes defined as the roots of the characteristic polynomial. An algorithm to compute the roots of a polynomial by computing the eigenvalues of the corresponding companion matrix turns the tables on the usual definition. We derive a firstorder error analysis of this algorithm that sheds light on both the underlying geometry of the problem as well as the numerical error of the algorithm. Our error analysis expands on work by Van Dooren and Dewilde in that it states that the algorithm is backward normwise stable in a sense that must be defined carefully. Regarding the stronger concept of a small componentwise backward error, our analysis predicts a small such error on a test suite of eight random polynomials suggested by Toh and Trefethen. However, we construct examples for which a small componentwise relative backward error is neither predicted nor obtained in practice. We extend our results to polynomial matrices, where the result is essentially the same, but the geometry becomes more complicated.

Optimal Scaling of Companion Pencils for the QZ-Algorithm∗†
Computing roots of a monic polynomial may be done by computing the eigenvalues of the corresponding companion matrix using for instance the well-known QR-algorithm. We know this algorithm to be backward stable since it computes exact eigenvalues of a slightly modified matrix. But it may yield very poor backward errors in the coefficients of the polynomial. In this paper we investigate what can ...
متن کاملTropical Scaling of Polynomial Matrices
The eigenvalues of a matrix polynomial can be determined classically by solving a generalized eigenproblem for a linearized matrix pencil, for instance by writing the matrix polynomial in companion form. We introduce a general scaling technique, based on tropical algebra, which applies in particular to this companion form. This scaling, which is inspired by an earlier work of Akian, Bapat, and ...
متن کاملA note on companion pencils
Various generalizations of companion matrices to companion pencils are presented. Companion matrices link to monic polynomials, whereas companion pencils do not require monicity of the corresponding polynomial. In the classical companion pencil case (A,B) only the coefficient of the highest degree appears in B’s lower right corner. We will show, however, that all coefficients of the polynomial ...
متن کاملBackward stability of polynomial root-finding using Fiedler companion matrices
Computing roots of scalar polynomials as the eigenvalues of Frobenius companion matrices using backward stable eigenvalue algorithms is a classical approach. The introduction of new families of companion matrices allows for the use of other matrices in the root-finding problem. In this paper, we analyze the backward stability of polynomial root-finding algorithms via Fiedler companion matrices....
متن کاملStatistical Condition Estimation for the Roots of Polynomials
This paper presents fast and reliable condition estimates for the roots of a real polynomial based on the method of statistical condition estimation (SCE) by Kenney and Laub. Using relative perturbations, we provide both a basic implementation of SCE and an advanced one via the condition of the eigenvalues of the corresponding companion matrix. New results for estimating the condition of eigenv...
